The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library is set to hold its annual meeting Wednesday, Dec. 6, on the third floor of the 200 Lisbon St. library in Callahan Hall.
A business meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. by a double feature talk by longtime collaborators David Chittim and Penny Jessop. They serve on the board of directors of the Androscoggin Historical Society, which recently held the grand opening of its new museum, library and headquarters at 93 Lisbon St., according to a news release from the library.
The Friends is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting the library in developing its facilities, services and resources. Activities of the Friends include purchasing computers and technology for patrons’ use and continued support for the children’s summer reading program, the Great Fall Forum, and the LPL Book Fund. The expansion of the original Carnegie library on Park Street through the Pillsbury block onto Lisbon Street is the direct result of efforts by the Friends in the 1990s.
Chittim and Jessop will discuss the history of the Androscoggin Historical Society, the recent move to its new, accessible location, and progress made in the society’s metamorphosis to a vibrant cultural institution in the heart of downtown. They will explore the growing interrelationships and potential collaborations among arts and cultural organizations countywide and share highlights of some recent programs. They will challenge the audience to identify various artifacts from the collection, some of which remain mysterious despite repeated displays.
The event is open to the public at no charge. There will be an opportunity to join the growing membership of either or both organizations.
