John C. Turner

SOUTH PORTLAND – It is with heartfelt sadness that we share the passing of John C. Turner, a beloved husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, and a cornerstone of our community. Born on Dec. 2, 1943, in Lewiston, John peacefully departed this world on Dec. 12, 2023, following a courageous four-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

John’s journey was marked by honorable service in the U.S. Air Force from 1962 to 1966. In 1968, he married his love, Suzanne, and demonstrated his dedication to education by completing his studies at Thomas College at the age of 29 after balancing the demands of spouse, father, school and a full-time job as a news reporter.

Embarking on a diverse career path and a philosophy of embracing risk, John made impactful contributions to the U.S. Brewers Association, serving as Chief Lobbyist and later becoming the Executive Director of the Lewiston/Auburn Economic Growth Council. An advocate for embracing challenges, he ventured into entrepreneurship with the establishment of Development Concepts Incorporated, guiding numerous companies towards success. His journey continued as a business consultant and Trustee of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court until his retirement at the age of 73. This reflected his commitment to justice and helping those facing financial challenges.

Beyond his professional pursuits, John found joy on the golf course, engaged in fly fishing, penned two books – “Life’s Bounces” and “Hank,” and cherished moments with his family. Starting as a caddy at Martindale Country Club at the age-of-9, his love for golf flourished, resulting in a zero handicap, championship victories and a remarkable hole-in-one that earned him a car. He credited so much of his good fortune from the friendships that came from a game he excelled at.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Suzanne, his son Ryan Turner and wife Shelley, daughter Kristina Walker and husband Scott, and four adored grandchildren – Mailey and Cal Turner, and Kailyn and Brendon Walker.

A visitation to celebrate John’s life will be held on Sunday, December 17, from 2-4 p.m., at Martindale Country Club, John’s cherished retreat. A service honoring John’s life will take place on Monday, December 18, at 1 p.m., at East Auburn Baptist Church. We invite all to come share stories, and pay tribute to a great man. Rest in peace, dear John. Your legacy of resilience and dedication to helping others is far and wide and will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing you.

“The most important thing for living a good life is to be thoughtful of your friends and neighbors, and love your family.” John C. Turner
