AUBURN — Ella Lavigne posted a double-double, with team highs of 15 points and 13 rebounds as Central Maine Community College cruised to a 71-44 win over Great Bay Community College in a Yankee Small College Conference women’s basketball game Thursday.
Rosa Prieto (12 points) and Destiny Mora Lopez (10) were the other starters in double figures for the Mustangs, who jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter and 51-30 heading into the fourth. Edward Little grad Aiwen Maiwen and Rangeley grad Winnie LaRochelle each scored seven points off the bench.
Mary Paradis scored a game-high 23 points for the Herons, and Madison Lovely recorded a game-high 20 rebounds to go along with 13 points.
DOW GETS SECOND DOSE OF MWBCA HONORS: For the second time this season, University of Maine at Farmington freshman Jessica Dow has been named the Rookie of the Week by the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
Dow received the latest honor earlier this week after she helped the Beavers win two out of three games last week.
She compiled 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals in a win over Plymouth State and then finished just shy of a double-double (nine points, nine rebounds) in a victory over University of Maine at Presque Isle in the first of two games between the in-state rivals. Dow had her highest-scoring game of the week in the rematch, with 19 points to go along with seven boards and three steals in the loss.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
CMCC 89, GREAT BAY 80: Boston Caldwell tallied a game-high 24 points as the Mustangs rallied to beat the Herons in Auburn.
Jackson Birmingham had 13 points and a team-high six assists for Central Maine Community College, which trailed 39-37 at halftime, and Leavitt grad Wyatt Hathaway helped out with 12 points off the bench.
Theodore Wolfe scored 21 points to lead Great Bay Community College.
REYNOLDS RACKS UP RECOGNITION: Jason Reynolds’ memorable week for UMaine-Farmington earned him recognition by the Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches & Writers Association.
Earlier this week, the MMBCWA named Reynolds its Rookie of the Week.
Reynolds helped the Beavers sandwich a pair of wins around a loss. He scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds in a win over Bates, then tossed in eight points and grabbed 14 boards in a loss to UMaine-Presque Isle. Reynolds and UMaine-Farmington got revenge against UMPI, as Reynolds scored a career-high 24 points and pulled in eight more rebounds in a week-ending win.
