NEWRY — Maine Adaptive welcomed more than 20 disabled veterans, along with their families and caregivers, on Jan. 24 for a four-day adventure in the Newry and Bethel area.
The Veterans No Boundaries weekend camp at Sunday River Ski Resort was founded 22 years ago with the mission of serving veterans with disabilities and their families by helping them participate in adaptive sports and recreation alongside their loved ones, according to a news release from Mary Scanlon, communications coordinator with Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation.
Congressman Jared Golden attended a morning session to meet with veterans, hear their stories, and learn about their experiences with Maine Adaptive, then joined participants on the slopes.
Veterans spent two and a half days skiing and snowboarding at Sunday River and a day in Bethel, based at Crescent Park Elementary School, where groups visited the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum, watched a film at The Gem Theater, shopped in local stores and played pickleball and board games at the school.
The following local businesses and individuals helped make this event possible: Sunday River Ski Resort; Frank DelDuca and his restaurant, Franks; Crescent Park School; The Gem Theater; The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum; Brooks Brothers; Riverview Hotel; The Good Food Store; West Paris Provisions; Karen and Rob Anderson; Jefferson Food Pantry; Kirstie and Nate Jarret; Hannaford; Market Basket; Sam’s Club; Walmart; and Kathy Peabody.
