WILTON — A strong thunderstorm impacted outdoor activities in the region Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10.

Deb Roberts, of Livermore was ice fishing on Wilson Lake in Wilton at the time. She posted on her Facebook page, “A first for us – forced off the ice from a thunderstorm in February!”

The Kennebec Valley Association Conference skiing championships were underway at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington, with the boys Nordic 5K classical pursuit race scheduled for 3 p.m. The race ended under heavy rain, booming thunder and several flashes of lightning, according to a Sun Journal sports article about the races.

A special weather statement was posted about 3:30 p.m. Saturday by the National Weather Service, Jerry Combs at the Gray station noted Sunday morning. It indicated strong thunderstorms were impacting portions of Maine, including southeast Franklin County, he said.

The line of thunderstorms was occurring eight miles northwest of Wilton to the Bethel area, Combs said of the statement. It warned of winds of up to 40 miles per hour, heavy rain and the possibility of pea-sized hail, he added.
