100 Years Ago: 1924

Hugh Pendexter of Norway, the well known writer of short novels based on historic facts, and a great student of history, addressed the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club at its meeting yesterday. He spoke of the methods used now in teaching history to children and stated that instructors should appeal to the children’s imagination more, using stories of historic importance, rather than trying to force them to learn history as a task. Efforts should be made, he stated, to get at the facts of history, as they were or are, and not as they may have been distorted by the biased opinions of some historians.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Several new stores will soon be opening at the Promenade Mall in Lewiston.

The Bloomin’ Place will open April 1, it was announced today by Howard B. Sacks, one of the developers of the large shopping mall located facing East Avenue at Lisbon Street.

The Bloomin’ Place will feature all types of flowers and plants. It is owned by Larry Fletcher. Mrs. Robert Bourasa will be the manager.

Opening Saturday on the lower level will be Strictly Formal, a shop specializing in formal wear. This is the first store to open in the lower level.

A lease has also been signed for a specialty shop to be located near the stairs leading to the lower level. It will be known as the Upstairs-Downstairs Shop and will feature “scented and  nonscented things.”

Scheduled for an opening in early April is Photo Land, to be located opposite Bradlees.

25 Years Ago: 1999

Ah, young love! Asked by Details magazine about her first crush, Sheryl Crow said: “Davy Jones of the Monkees. Then when I was 12, it was Peter Frampton. Those tight pants and long hair were truly dangerous and radical for a kid from the Midwest. Then he started losing his hair and I grew up.”
