Amy Smith stands Wednesday before a crowd at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 51-53 Howard Street Condos in Lewiston. Smith is the founder and executive director of Healthy Homeworks, an organization working to increase the rate of homeownership in Lewiston. The condos consist of a three-unit building and a single family house. Each buyer will join the homeowner association, managed by Healthy Homeworks, and pay association fees for insurance, shared utilities and maintenance. Healthy Homeworks renovated the units and is selling them at a $50,000 deficit, which will be covered by philanthropic donations. Andree Kehn/Sun JournalAmy Smith chats Wednesday with members of the public on a private deck at the 51-53 Howard Street Healthy Homeworks Condos in Lewiston. Smith, the founder and executive director of Healthy Homeworks, says the group is planning to purchase 20 additional units in the next two and a half years. “The buildings have to be new, which means after 1900,” Smith said. “And they have to be stacked. We don’t want any weird rooflines, and they have to have off-street parking.” Each unit in the Howard Street Condos has additional storage space and a private outdoor deck. The total in mortgage, association fees and utilities is estimated at $1,310 a month. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
