NORWAY — The Norway Museum & Historical Society (NMHS) is pleased to announce an important addition to its art collection. Melanie Tornberg of Bethel recently donated a Vivian Akers painting from her personal collection to NMHS. The 1935 oil painting, titled “Winter Landscape,” is a view from the southwestern side of Pikes Hill, looking toward Frost Hill. Vivian Milner Akers (1886 – 1966) was a Norway native and nationally acclaimed painter, whose work is highly prized.
Curator/Collection Manager Susan Denison accepted the painting on behalf of NMHS, stating “We are especially pleased this painting will remain in Norway as part of our permanent collection. We are very grateful for Melanie’s kind generosity with this piece of our history.”
NMHS invites you to visit the museum to see this and other art by Akers, as well as paintings by other noted Norway artists. The museum is currently open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon and after Memorial Day, will also be open Tuesdays from 1 to 4 p.m.
