Nathaniel Freeman, right, and Olivia of Auburn leave the Lewiston Farmer’s Market on Sunday — opening day for the season — with plenty of vegetables. Nathaniel Freeman says he moved to the area after a stroke affected his ability to work as a long-haul trucker. He says he hopes to open a tattoo shop in the area. The couple say they take advantage of a program supported by the Maine Federation of Farmers’ Markets that offers a one-to-one match of SNAP/EBT dollars spent on local food at farmers’ markets. “Grocery stores can’t compete with lovingly grown food,” Nathaniel Freeman says. “It just tastes better.” Olivia declined to provide her last name.
