AUBURN — School Committee members voted Wednesday to terminate the current lease of the SHAREcenter effective Oct. 31, without knowing where it will move next.
School board member and SHAREcenter board member Patricia Gautier explained the structural issues going on with the building.
“So, we’re kind of in transition in regard to where we’re going to be when this lease ends,” Gautier said.
SHAREcenter’s board of directors is still deliberating how it will move forward with the center, Gautier told the Sun Journal in an email Thursday, adding “the best I can say is ‘stay tuned.’”
The center’s mission is to divert excess items that might have otherwise ended up in a landfill to its members, which include schools, nonprofits and some for-profit organizations. Members pay a fee to have access to items acquired by the center, such as stationary and furniture, along with many other items.
More than $200,000 worth of product has been lost in three separate flooding events since last August, along with damage caused by a leaky roof. Items must be kept up off of the floor and covered with tarps.
Flooding at the building occurred during some of the major rain events the region has experienced in the last year, property owner Brian Kirouac previously said. After taking ownership of the building last summer, he is still trying to figure out the cause of the flooding. He plans to replace the roof in the next 60 days.
Amid this transition period, longtime Director Lisa Rodrigues is stepping down due to health issues.
Though Auburn does not pay the SHAREcenter’s rent at 1830 Lisbon St. in Lewiston, it agreed to guarantee its lease.
City Council representative Adam Platz said at the School Committee meeting that because the city is no longer fiscally responsible for the SHAREcenter, it should not be guaranteeing its lease.
The SHAREcenter was founded by the Auburn School Department more than two decades ago, but has since become an independent organization. It is working on becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit now, Gautier said.
The location of the SHAREcenter has changed several times over the years. It moved into the 20,000-square-foot building at 1830 Lisbon St. in Lewiston early last year.
