A rather spectacular escape effected from the State School at Hallowell at 1 o’clock on Thursday morning when Cora Littlefield dropped from the third story window of her sleeping room to the ground by tying together bed clothing and hitching the same to a bedpost. The girl was found walking along the tracks of the M.C.R.R. near the station at about 2 o’clock by night officer, James Carbino, who after questioning her brought her to the police headquarters where she remained all night. At the Institution she was not missed when the officers were called up this morning. She was returned to the custody of Supt. Webber.

At the station last night the girl told a plausible story but finally confessed that she had escaped from the school and told Officer Carbino that she had planned the escape with another girl some time ago. She also said that she would return and not repeat the event again. In her tumble to the ground the girl narrowly missed striking a long pipe that was sticking up in the ground. Also, what at first was supposed to be a sprained ankle, upon examination was found to be a compound fracture. Surgical treatment was administered later Thursday at the Augusta General Hospital.
