There’s a stench in Maine politics coming from the State House. It’s the growing effect of money in elections and mega-donations to political action committees.
The state’s largest beneficiary is Rep. Laurel Libby of Auburn.
She sued to change campaign finance law last year. The resulting loophole lifted donation limits for individuals and businesses, which, she argued, violated First Amendment rights.
Apparently, the price of “free speech” is skyrocketing: Her PACs have raised over $700,000 in the last few years.
Libby campaign and PAC funds receive many donations from outside Maine: Florida, New York, Connecticut, etc.
Are wealthy donors expecting favors? Buying influence? Why are Maine voters allowing big bucks to distort local politics?
It’s time to clear the air and reduce the warping influence of outside money in Maine. We need a representative who’ll serve constituents instead of focusing on raising cash.
Vote for Dan Campbell, a Clean Election candidate.
Tim McCloskey, Minot
