DEAR SUN SPOTS: Friends of Worthley Pond’s LakeSmart Program is holding a plant sale in conjunction with the Welcome Back Social at the Honey Run Campground Pavilion on 30 East Shore Road in Peru on Saturday, June 15, from 9-11 a.m.
A variety of flower and vegetable seedlings, perennials and shrubs will be available for purchase.
The Friends group is seeking to expand varieties by asking community members for plant donations. House plants, annuals, seedlings, bulbs, and shrubs of any noninvasive species will be accepted. Please label all donated plants. These can be dropped off before the event, or the day of the sale from 8-9 a.m., at 30 East Shore Road. Please call me with questions or to donate. — Dave, Peru
ANSWER: This sounds like it will be a grand time!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have books and pamphlets that are of historical interest and are available for donation to an established, recognized historical society. Following is a list:
• Encyclopedia Britannica with American Revisions and Additions, c.1891. While this reference is significantly outdated by modern research standards, it contains a wealth of information that is absent from modern reference materials, including the web.
• Wells’s Lawyer and US Form book, c.1859.
• “One Hundred and Fifty Years of Music Publishing in the United States,” 1783-1933, by William Arms Fisher.
• “The Speaker’s Ideal Entertainments for Home, Church, & School: Recitals, Dialogues & Dramas” 1892, by George M. Vickers.
• “Domestic Medical Practice: A Household Adviser in the Treatment of Diseases, Arranged for Family Use,” 1916.
• 34,000 Medical Words, pocket encyclopedia, c.1915.
I also have a group of booklets and pamphlets about home vegetable and produce gardening, insect pests and sprays, chickens, and home and farm construction.
If an area historical society is interested in these books and pamphlets, I may be contacted at 782-5393 (leave a message) or [email protected].
Acceptance of the donation should be considered as a single lot, i.e. all materials need to be accepted then picked up by the interested party. The encyclopedia is a large, heavy set of books.
This offer is a donation to a historical society only. Private collectors, businesses, or other non-organizational entities will be expected to make a monetary offer. — Janet, no town
ANSWER: There are many historical societies in the state and those associated with them may not see this column. I advise that you contact them individually, including the Maine Historical Society in Portland. Let us know how it goes.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I sent a document to you but I haven’t seen it in the column yet. Why? — No name, no town
ANSWER: I’m not sure which letter you’re referring to, but I’ve noticed lately that a few letters have been sent that need to be retyped or reformatted so that may be holding things up.
Sending jpg or PDF files takes extra time as they can’t be copied and edited, nor can a poster. What works best is a simple email, with a WORD or Google document attached if needed.
The simpler the font and format the better. Please use sentence case capitalization and punctuation as this saves Ms. Sun Spots and the copy editors time. There isn’t space for photos. For handwritten letters, use the P.O. address shown below. Thank you!
This column is for you, our readers. It is for your questions and comments. There are only two rules: You must write to the column and sign your name. We won’t use it if you ask us not to. Please include your phone number. Letters will not be returned or answered by mail, and telephone calls will not be accepted. Your letters will appear as quickly as space allows. Address them to Sun Spots, P.O. Box 4400, Lewiston, ME 04243-4400. Inquiries can also be emailed to [email protected].
