The measured response to Donald Trump’s conviction from Maine Senate Minority Leader Trey Stewart was heartening.

As reported in the June 1 Sun Journal, he believes it is too early to judge the verdict since the case is likely to be appealed, reflecting continued faith in our judicial system.

While Trump supporters are understandably upset, most GOP officials attacked the trial as a sham. In doing so they dismiss the judge as corrupt, the jurors as dupes, and a bedrock democratic institution as a farce.

The case reached trial only after evidence was gathered, reviewed by a grand jury, found sufficient as a basis for criminal charges and solid enough to deny defense motions to dismiss.

The judge may have erred, and this will come out during the appeal. But it is disappointing in the extreme that so many GOP officials are deliberately and recklessly undermining trust in our judicial system.
