A 3-year-old boy injured in Sanford on Tuesday afternoon appears to have been wounded by a self-inflicted gunshot, police said.

Sanford police and emergency medical personnel responding to a report about the sound of a gunshot at 4:28 p.m. found the toddler at 13 Shaw Road with a wound to his hand, said Maj. Matthew Gagné.

The child, accompanied by his father, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment.

Gagné said that a pistol was found inside the home. He said Wednesday morning that the wound appeared to be self-inflicted and there are no charges at this time.

The police department’s Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the case. Gagné said a search warrant was issued last night and there is no risk to the public. He declined Wednesday to identify the family, citing the pending investigation, or provide an update on the child’s condition.
