The State Public Utilities Commission took under advisement Thursday the earnest appeal by Mayor Brann of Lewiston for a gate and gate-tender at the Fair Grounds crossing on Main street, at a hearing in Lewiston city building Thursday. The Maine Central Railroad opposed the petition.
Mayor Brann urged that since five persons had been killed in collisions between automobiles and trains within three years, a gate and gateman are essential to the safety of automobile drivers passing the fair grounds. He declared that only expert drivers will notice the automatic signal, and that the more or less careless motorist must be protected — since many drivers are careless to some degree.
Trains pass there at 60 miles an hour he said the M. C. R. R. president told him.

People who come to Lewiston to engage in illegal activity may wind up donating money to a special cause instead.
Police Chief William Welch announced Thursday that money seized from 10 men who recently pleaded guilty to engaging prostitutes will be given to the YMCA, YWCA and the Boys & Girls Club.
The nearly $800 in cash will be put to use at the three youth clubs and officials said more money could be on the way — others convicted of engaging in prostitution in a recent police sting will forfeit any money they allegedly handed to undercover officers.
