NASCAR: Hendrick Motorsports has dropped longtime sponsor Hooters, saying the restaurant chain known for chicken wings and skimpy wait-staff outfits could not meet its financial commitment to the team.

Hooters had sponsored the No. 9 car driven by NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott since 2017.

Hooters has recently closed more than 40 locations around the country, according to multiple reports.

• NASCAR Cup Series rookie Josh Berry has signed to drive the Wood Brothers’ No. 21 car next season after the shuttering of his current Stewart-Haas Racing team. The team said Berry signed a multi-year contact. He takes over the No. 21 ride from Harrison Burton.

• Croatia is advancing in its bid to earn one of the final spots in the Paris Olympics, but not with the kind of momentum it had hoped.

New Zealand beat Croatia 90-86 in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Piraeus, Greece. Corey Webster had 21 points and Shea Ili added 18, including a go-ahead layup in the final minute to help New Zealand rally for the win.

Ivica Zubac had 29 points and 16 rebounds, Dario Saric added 19 points and eight rebounds and Mario Hezonja had 16 points for Croatia, which was able to secure a place in the semifinals on Saturday with the four-point differential. The loss, however, kept alive the most dangerous player at the Greece qualifier.

NBA star Luka Doncic and Slovenia can now make it out of Greece’s Group A and into the semifinals if they beat New Zealand by 21 points when the teams meet Thursday. If not, New Zealand will advance.

• In Riga, Latvia, Montenegro survived a sluggish start to keep its semifinal hopes alive with a 70-66 win over Cameroon.

TOUR DE FRANCE: Mark Cavendish broke Eddy Merckx’s long-standing record for most career Tour de France stage wins with his 35th victory.

The 39-year-old Cavendish sprinted for the win in the fifth stage, pulling away some 100 meters from the line despite being bunched in. He crossed the line ahead of Jasper Philipsen and then jumped into the arms of a teammate.

Cavendish equaled Merckx’s mark of 34 wins during the 2021 Tour and went close to No. 35 in the seventh stage last year when he was narrowly beaten to the line by Philipsen. He then crashed a day later and broke his right collarbone.

Merckx, the Belgian considered the most dominant rider in cycling history, won his 34 individual stages at the Tour from 1969-75.

Two-time champion Tadej Pogacar retained the race leader’s yellow jersey. He leads overall by 45 seconds over Tour debutant Remco Evenepoel.
