Memories

Chester, SC (former Norway resident)
Our friendship started in first grade
back in thirty-nine
Lois lived up by the lake
The house in town was mine
We both liked the movies
we’d go at any cost
even in a rumble seat
the excitement wasn’t lost
she had eyes for Cornell Wilde
Bob Hutton was my man
we’d cut out every picture
from movie books we’d scan
We also liked The Matches
Especially Ivan Braun
when his name was on the bill
It didn’t take us long
We’d head to Association Hall
and get a front-row seat
Hoping to see Ivan
but ending up with Pete!
Every year when summer arrived
the tar crew came to town
we’d pick our favorite driver
and hope to flag him down
When we reached our teenage years
things began to change
Lois liked the races
and dances were my game
She had a special driver
who drove the Number Five
No matter who was racing
he was the “only man alive”
Lois married “Number Five”
one August sunny day
They were together many years
their love was here to stay
I had a special someone
who was just back from Korea
one night in June we tied the knot.
It lasted fifty years.
There surely was a future
As bright as it could be
for these former Stoneham girls
and all their memories.
