Anthony Davis scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, Tyrese Haliburton came up with a pair of late 3-pointers Monday that helped stop a freefall, and the U.S. beat Australia 98-92 at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to improve to 2-0 in its five-game slate of exhibitions leading into the Paris Olympics.
Devin Booker scored 16 for the U.S., Anthony Edwards scored 14 and three players — LeBron James, Bam Adebayo and Joel Embiid — finished with 10 for the Americans, who will play Serbia in an exhibition Wednesday in Abu Dhabi.
The U.S. led by 24 midway through the third quarter, yet saw that lead cut to six with 5:05 left after Australia went on a 39-21 run. But Haliburton had the next six points on his 3s, pushing the lead back to 92-80. Australia twice cut it to four, but Booker went 4 of 4 from the line in the final eight seconds.
HOCKEY
NHL: Forward Quinton Byfield, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 draft, agreed to a five-year, $31.25 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings.
Byfield, 21, made significant strides last season with the Kings, recording a career-high 20 goals and 35 assists while playing 80 games. He was the first Los Angeles player to record a 20-goal season at his age since Anze Kopitar in 2007-08.
SOCCER
GERMANY: Forward Thomas Müller announced his retirement from international soccer after a 14-year career that included the 2014 World Cup title.
The 34-year-old Bayern Munich striker played 131 times for his country, scoring 45 goals.
FRANCE: Olivier Giroud, the country’s all-time leading scorer, confirmed the end of his international career. He had said he would go only as far as France went in the European Championship.
FOOTBALL
NFL: Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison was arrested in California on suspicion of driving under the influence.
According to the California Highway Patrol, an officer responded Friday night to a report of a disabled vehicle blocking a lane on the westbound Interstate 105 exit to Sepulveda Boulevard that leads to Los Angeles International Airport. The officer found Addison, 22, asleep in the driver’s seat of his white Rolls-Royce, conducted a DUI investigation and arrested him.
• Hall of Famer Terrell Davis said he was “humiliated” after being handcuffed and removed from a United Airlines flight, then later apologized to by law enforcement, over the weekend Davis, who previously played for Denver, wrote in an Instagram post that he had tapped a flight attendant on the arm, prompting the employee to shout “don’t hit me” and hurry toward the front of the plane.Davis said law enforcement determined the flight attendant’s accusations didn’t have merit.
TENNIS
NORDEA OPEN: Rafael Nadal returned to the clay courts in Bastad, Sweden, for the first time in 19 years, teaming up with Casper Ruud to win a first-round doubles match against Guido Andreozzi and Miguel Reyes-Varela, 6-1, 6-4.
Nadal won the singles title in southern Sweden as a 19-year-old in 2005 and this is his first time back as he prepares for the Olympic tournament.
RANKINGS: Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova returned to the WTA’s top 10 for the first time in six months, jumping 22 places to No. 10, and runner-up Jasmine Paolini rose to a career-best No. 5. Iga Swiatek remained No. 1, and Jannik Sinner is still No. 1 among the men.
