Lewiston musicians Jessie and Greg Boardman will head up the band at an evening of contra dancing at LPL’s Callahan Hall on Friday, July 19.

An evening of old-time New England folk dancing  is set for 7 p.m. Friday, July 19, in Callahan Hall at Lewiston Public Library, 200 Lisbon St.

Folks of all ages are invited to enjoy the air-conditioning and lively mix of jigs and reels played on fiddles, guitar, banjo, spoons and more. A half-hour of extra easy dances to acquaint first-time dancers with the basic moves. The event will conclude with a last waltz at 10 p.m.

Performing the music for the event are fiddlers Greg and Jessie Boardman, backed up by guitarist Chris Robley and banjo/mandolin player Don Cunningham, with a few special guest musicians also on deck. Caller Cindy Larock will lead attendees in an assortment of contra, square and circle dances similar to the ones done in rural Granges throughout New England nearly every Saturday night for well over a century.

“No prior dance experience is necessary, and people are invited to come either with or without a partner,” Larock said in a news release.

Dancers are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Those who would prefer to sit out, tap their toes and listen to the music are also welcome.

Admission will cost $15 for adults and $5 for teens,  and is free for children 12 and younger.

Proceeds will benefit the library’s children’s room. The performers are donating their time so that all proceeds can be used to help pay for needed renovations.
