AUBURN — Police said criminal charges are expected after a 77-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in a Tuesday morning crash on Washington Street.

Police said in a Facebook post that Carole Bennett, 77, of Lewiston was attempting to cross Washington Street into the northbound lane in her 2014 Ford Escape at 5:56 a.m. when she entered the path of a 2021 Hyundai Elantra driven by Hedulene Domingos, 25, of Lewiston.

Domingos’ vehicle struck Bennett’s, sending it across the grass median into northbound traffic, according to the post. Bennett was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for serious injuries. Domingos was not seriously injured, police said.

Domingos was operating her vehicle with a learner’s permit, but was not accompanied by a licensed driver, according to the post.

As Auburn police and state police continue investigating the crash, charges are expected, according to the post.
