ARLINGTON, Texas — Major League Baseball is considering whether to take actions protecting players following threats rising from the proliferation of gambling in the U.S.
“In the last month or so, players mentioned this issue to me,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said Tuesday ahead of the All-Star Game. “It’s obviously one that’s of concern, and we’ve been discussing internally what and whether we should do to be more proactive in this area.”
The U.S. Supreme Court in May 2018 struck down a federal law barrinhg betting on football, basketball, baseball and other sports in most states. Sports books have since opened at stadiums across the major U.S. pro sports.
“Any time a player receives a threat from any source on any topic it is a matter of concern to us that we take really seriously in terms of our central security operation and the regional people that we employ with each club,” Manfred told the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
Tony Clark, the Players’ association head and a former All-Star first baseman, said the union “had concerns at the outset and we still have them now, particularly as more players, whether in our sport or otherwise, find themselves in the crosshairs.”
BASEBALL WILL consider going back to having players wear their team uniforms for the All-Star Game.
Club uniforms were used by the American League from 1933-2019 and by the National League from 1934-2019. When the game resumed in 2021 following the pandemic-related cancellation in 2020, MLB had started a uniform contract with Nike and Fanatics, and All-Stars were outfitted in specially designed league uniforms that drew criticism from traditionalists.
THE THREE-DAY amateur draft concluded, with the 30 teams blazing through 300 picks in less than 31/2 hours.
The Los Angeles Angels took outfielder Lucas Ramirez in the 17th round. Ramirez is the son of 12-time All-Star Manny Ramirez. The Boston Red Sox selected D’Angelo Ortiz in the 19th round. He’s the son of Hall of Fame slugger David Ortiz.
“We just felt like it was a good add to the organization,” said the Red Sox director of amateur scouting. Devin Pearson. “It’s a plus that his dad is David Ortiz, but we drafted him as a prospect.”
HOME RUN DERBY: Teoscar Hernández of the Los Angeles Dodgers won the event when he beat Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals 14-13 in the final round Monday night.
Hernández, 31, hit 49 homers over three rounds that totaled 3.98 miles and became the first Dodgers player to win the derby.
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso’s bid to join Ken Griffey Jr. as a three-time derby champion ended when he hit only 12 homers in the first round.
