An excavator lowers a giant sandbag Wednesday afternoon into the Sabattus River at the corner of Elm and Greene streets in Sabattus. The crew from Linkel Environmental Construction of Topsham is diverting the water so the dam, background, can be removed and replaced with a fish passage. The project is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law with $200 million allocated to Maine from the National Fish Passage Program. The Atlantic Salmon Project is also involved in creating a natural passage for fish to spawn all the way to Sabattus Pond. When the passage is complete, the Maine Department of Transportation will reconstruct the bridge over the road nearby. Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal
