DEAR SUN SPOTS: On Tuesday, July 16, my cousin Richard, brother Dan, and I were having lunch at The Station Grill in Lewiston.
All of us are veterans, and I was wearing my AF hat. As a gentleman was walking out, he stopped at our table and said, “‘Thank you for your service to our country. Your meals have been paid for.'”
This just blew me away. I couldn’t believe he had paid for all our meals. I don’t remember how many times I said thank you and I got a little choked up. This was so nice of him.
If this caring gentleman sees this letter, I again want to thank him for his kindness. It was a great feeling to be recognized and appreciated. I’ll pay it forward as I have done before. — Larry, no town
ANSWER: How heartwarming! These letters written in a spirit of gratitude make my role as Ms. Sun Spots extra special and I love sharing them with readers.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m looking for a used stainless kitchen sink that someone may want to get rid of, or are there any places that sell this type of used home furnishings?
I’m making an outdoor cleaning station for my wife to wash garden vegetables so the mess stays out of the kitchen. I can be contacted at 212-4624.
Thanks for all you do for our community. — Larry, no town
ANSWER: Perhaps a reader in Sun Spots Land has an old sink for you. An outdoor sink is wonderful to have especially when you have a garden, small children, or pets that need a good scrubbing before coming indoors.
If you use Facebook, there is a group called The Buy Nothing Project. The concept of Buy Nothing is simple: you join your local group (it’s free) then request and/or offer items or services. The idea is to encourage people to help one another however they can, and to reuse and recycle.
I have personal experience with this group and can’t say enough good things. It’s been a joy to offer no longer needed items for free and to find treasures as well.
You may also want to check in with junk yards, yard sales, and local contractors who may have items from a remodel. Let us know what happens!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: My husband has a bee coverall that needs a zipper replacement. I have removed the old zipper and tried to sew the new zipper in but the thickness of the fabric is too much for my sewing machine. Do you have someone in your Rolodex who could do this for me? — Ilene, Turner
ANSWER: Sun Spotters in search of a seamstress is one of the most popular requests and I’m happy to recommend these talented people who keep our “material goods” repaired.
In the Rolodex, I have Sue Roebuck, “Mom the Mender” on Upper Street, Turner, (754-6558); The Mill End Store at 971 Main St., Oxford, (539-4451); Make It Sew, LLC in Bowdoinham, ([email protected]); LA Clean & Spin/John’s Clean & Spin, 782-3466 in Auburn or at 784-9096 in Lewiston; If You Say Sew in Durham, 653-5507; and Veronica’s Creations in Greene, 514-6820.
