AUTO RACING
Tyler Reddick circled Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 49.469 seconds on the final qualifying run of the day to capture his first Brickyard 400 pole.
Reddick’s team owner, Denny Hamlin, will begin on the outside of Row 1 in Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 11 Toyota. Hendrick Motorsports drivers held the next three starting positions – Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson and William Byron.
• Cole Custer will return to NASCAR’s Cup Series next season as the driver for Haas Factory, the team announced.
Team officials said they would have a technical alliance with RFK Racing, with additional help coming from Ford Performance.
Custer, the reigning Xfinity Series champion, lost his Cup ride at Stewart-Haas Racing after the 2022 season and has spent the last two seasons racing in the second-tier Xfinity series.
• Riley Herbst bumped his way past Aric Almirola coming through the final turn, then held off hard-charging teammate Cole Custer to win the Pennzoil 250 in the Xfinity Series’.
Herbst’s second career victory came by 0.167 seconds.
INDYCAR: Colton Herta took the pole position for Sunday’s race in Toronto on the Exhibition Place street course, turning a lap at 59.5431 seconds
Trying to win for the first time this season, the Andretti Global driver will start alongside Andretti teammate Kyle Kirkwood, who had a lap at 59.6375. Meyer Shank’s Felix Rosenqvist was third at 59.8252.
Points leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing will start 18th after being penalized for interference during the first qualifying segment.
FORMULA ONE: McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri locked up the Hungarian Grand Prix front row ahead of series leader Max Verstappen with a stellar qualifying session in Budapest.
It was the first 1-2 finish in qualifying for McLaren in 12 years.
Verstappen will start third in his Red Bull. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz had the fourth fastest time, followed by Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
GOLF
LPGA: Chanettee Wannasaen opened a three-stroke lead in the Dana Open for Children, shooting a 5-under 66 at Highland Meadows in Sylvania, Ohio.
A day after finishing with an eagle to take the outright lead, Wannasaen birdied the par-5 18th to reach 16-under 197. The 20-year-old Thai player won the Portland Classic last year for her lone LPGA Tour title.
Haeran Ryu of South Korea was in second place. She birdied the twin closing par 5s in a 65.
CYCLING
TOUR DE FRANCE: Tadej Pogacar edged defending champion Jonas Vingegaard at the top of Col De La Couillole to win the 20th and penultimate stage, adding more seconds to his considerable lead.
Pogacar became only the second man to win five mountain stages in one Tour, matching Gino Bartali in 1948.
TENNIS
NORDEA OPEN: Rafael Nadal reached his first final since the 2022 French Open by rallying to beat Duje Ajdukovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in Bastad, Sweden.
Nadal will play Nuno Borges, who beat Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-3, 6-4 to reach his first tour-level final.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: United States captain Tyler Adams will miss the start of the English Premier League season while he recovers from back surgery, Bournemouth Manager Andoni Iraola said.
Adams missed most of last season because of a hamstring problem, and after a brief return, he ended his debut Bournemouth campaign because of back spasms.
Adams, 25, played a full game for the U.S. in its 1-0 loss to Uruguay at Copa America on July 1. Iraola told the BBC that the defensive midfielder had surgery two days later.
