Western Maine first responders were busy Friday and Saturday with a pair of rescues, one in Bigelow Preserve in Franklin County and another on Streaked Mountain in Oxford County.
First responders were called around 1:54 p.m. Friday to the Cranberry Peak Trail in Bigelow Preserve, about a mile from the peak in Wyman Township in Franklin County, for a report of an injured hiker, according to a Eustis Fire Department Facebook post.
Four agencies, including Eustis and Carrabassett Valley fire departments, Franklin Search and Rescue, and Maine Warden Service aided in locating and treating the hiker. Crews transported the injured hiker to the trailhead where a NorthStar EMS Sugarloaf base crew took over.
The rescue concluded around 8:20 p.m. with no reported injuries to rescuers.
First responders in Oxford County responded around 1 p.m. Saturday for a hiker near the peak of Streaked Mountain in Paris suffering from a medical episode, according to dispatch.
Fire and rescue crews from Buckfield, Paris and Norway responded immediately to the call and located the hiker on the Buckfield side of the trail a short time later.
Buckfield fire Chief Adam Dupile said the hiker “just seemed to be overheated and tired” and walked to the Paris side trailhead with rescue crews.
Dupile said the hiker was evaluated by PACE Ambulance at the trailhead.
