An eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly consumes nectar July 17 from a zinnia at a garden in Lisbon. Although the eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly is a solitary creature, often flying in treetops, it can be seen when a group of male swallowtails gathers on damp soil to drink water, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The water contains sodium ions and various amino acids, which reportedly allow them to live longer. Adults of both sexes take nectar from a wide variety of native and exotic garden plants.
