PHILLIPS — The Phillips Public Library successfully held its eighth annual Readers, Writers and Runners 5K July 20 on a sunny day perfect for running. The event featured local mystery author Maureen Milliken and saw an enthusiastic turnout despite the occasional speeding car, which was promptly managed by local law enforcement.
Registration for the race began at 9 a.m. in the library parking lot, with a $10 fee. By 10 a.m., runners took off on a scenic route through downtown Phillips, passing the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad and crossing the Sandy River twice, with clear mountain views adding to the picturesque experience. The race concluded with an awards ceremony and a prize raffle for all participants.
This year’s unique ceramic medals, crafted by Andrea Bredeau of Cabin Pottery, were awarded to the top finishers. Josh Plog, 40, finished first overall and among the male runners with a time of 19:16 minutes. His sons, Elliot Plog, 12 and Emerson Plog, 10, followed in second and third place with times of 25:54 and 28:45, respectively. The top female runners, Annabelle Blanchard, 32 and Bailey Randle, 28, tied with a time of 29:03, while Laurel King, 63, secured third place among the females at 29:27. The oldest runner, Naomi Henderson, 74, another member of the Plog family, finished with a time of 46:42.

Following the 5K, participants and the public gathered for a discussion with Milliken, known for her Bernie O’Dea mystery series set in a fictional Franklin County town near Phillips and Carrabassett Valley. Milliken shared insights into her writing process and her inspirations, engaging the audience with stories about her characters and plots. Books were available for purchase, adding to the literary festivities of the day. A light lunch was also provided during the visit with Milliken.
Milliken, who did not run in the race, also received a special ceramic medal. She helped draw numbers for different runners to choose a prize from the prize table, which included books, freshly baked goods, and gift card coupons for the library’s book and thrift shop located upstairs in the library.
Milliken expressed her gratitude on her Facebook page, noting, “I’ve done a lot of author events but never gotten an awesome medal before,” she wrote. “Thank you, Phillips Public Library your fantastic staff, and wonderful patrons for a great day.” The author’s medal, created by Bredeau, featured a design inspired by Milliken’s sister, artist Rebecca Milliken.
