Alan Whitman conducts a “recon mission” Thursday on a powered skateboard along the Riverside Greenway in Lewiston. Whitman, a lifelong skateboarder, recently purchased the powered board which he rides while scouting accessible places for his wife, who uses a wheelchair. He checks to ensure the paths are fully accessible so they can enjoy them together. Whitman has explored public pathways in Lewiston, Auburn and Portland, and wishes there was a comprehensive list of accessible walkways. “You can get lulled into submission,” he said of the electric skateboard, “I try not to go faster than I’d want to fall off of it.” Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
