PARIS — The Paris Fire Department has hired David Blaquiere, Fire Chief Mark Blaquiere’s son, as its new full-time firefighter.

The town’s personnel policy states “any applicant who is related to a current employee within a department may not be considered for regular employment or employment for a limited time within that department.”

However, the select board signed a waiver in March, as provided in the town handbook, that allows for relatives to be hired as long as they are not supervised by the relative, according to Town Clerk Elizabeth Knox.

The personnel policy states that “in a situation where the nepotism policy is waived, relatives shall not supervise one another.”

Town Manager Natalie Andrews said that Deputy Chief Brad Frost will supervise David Blaquiere, assign duties, and sign his time cards. If it comes to a discipline issue, that would be between Andrews and Frost.

“The chief was taken out of the hiring process,” she said by phone Tuesday.

The Paris Fire Department has two full-time employees as well as 24 members who get paid per emergency call to respond, according to Fire Chief Mark Blaquiere.

In July, the department lost its other full-time employee, necessitating a search for a new employee.

“The fire department posted and interviewed with their hiring committee and they made their recommendation to the town manager,” Andrews said of the hire at Monday’s Paris Select Board meeting.

When asked if the former employee left and what the employee’s name is, Mark Blaquiere said “that is not a discussion we’re going to have.” He said the employee worked for the department for 15 months.

David Blaquiere will start in his position Aug. 26, the fire chief said.

Also on Monday, the Paris Select Board approved an updated contract with the Teamsters Local 340 police department union. The town has been in negotiations since spring.

The Paris Select Board will next meet at the town office at 6 p.m. Aug. 26.
