AUBURN — The First Universalist Church of Auburn welcomes the Rev. Terry Sweetser as its new minister. Sweetser began preaching Aug. 4 and for eight consecutive Sundays he will give the congregation and visitors an opportunity to get to know him in the context of church worship life.

“We are fortunate to be able to engage Rev. Terry as our minister,” said David Das, president of the Auburn UU Board of Directors, according to a news release from the church. “His energy and enthusiasm are contagious.” Weekly homilies have, indeed been lively, engaging participants listening in person and on Zoom.

“The many positions that he has held within Unitarian Universalism give him a unique perspective on church life,” said Das of Sweetser’s 50 years of service as in both parish ministry and supporting the denomination at the national level.

Notably, Sweetser has specialized in transitional ministry, helping congregations rediscover themselves. He describes this as a time, “when a congregation can understand deeply and fully that its dynamism resides not in any one leader. It thrives within itself and in the larger world serves.”

“A particular focus for Rev. Terry,” Das notes, “will be working with our new Director of Religious Exploration, Samantha McCune, to reimagine our programs for children and youth.” McCune is hosting a Family Game Night at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, to engage families who may be interested in Auburn UU’s religious exploration approach.

Sunday worship is held at 10 a.m. at 169 Pleasant St. The church has parking and is accessible.
