LEWISTON — A male juvenile was apparently injured by glass when the vehicle he was in was riddled with bullets early Monday morning in the area of Pine and Jefferson streets, according to police.

Lewiston Police Lt. Derrick St. Laurent said in a news release that officers were sent there for reports of multiple gunshots. Witnesses described hearing gunfire and seeing a vehicle speed away. They discovered several shell casings on the street.

Minutes later, police responded to the 7-Eleven convenience store at 345 Main St. for reports of a male juvenile with a possible gunshot wound to the leg. First responders discovered the victim in a vehicle that matched the description witnesses gave. The vehicle was covered with bullet holes.

The juvenile was transported to Central Maine Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening.

“It appears the victim’s injuries were sustained by glass (or) shrapnel and not by a direct bullet,” St. Laurent said.

Neither the victim nor his passengers are cooperating with the investigation, he said.
