“Two were seriously injured and hundreds bruised” was the report Tuesday of a hasty check up of the casualties from the collapse Monday night of the first base bleachers at the Lewiston athletic park. Some five hundred fans were thrown to the ground at the opening of the 8th inning of the Lewiston-Augusta baseball game Monday evening.

The 40 Winks Furniture Company on Lisbon Road, Lewiston, was the scene of a burglary last night that netted thieves nearly $3,000 in merchandise.

According to Lewiston police, entry was gained through the rear of the building by breaking an overhead window and unlocking a rear door. The theft reportedly occurred sometime after 6 p.m. yesterday when the store, which is conducting a going-out-of-business sale, closed for the day.

Taken in the break were two queen-size mattresses, two bedroom sets, two living room sets, and two pine dining room tables, all still in their boxes. Value of the stolen merchandise was set at $2,761.

Got a hankering for green tomato pickles? Or perhaps mocha cake or monkey cookies? How about brown bread, nut bread or scotch bread?

The Paris Hill Country Club Centennial Committee can help, with a reproduction of the club’s circa 1927 cookbook that features not only time-tested recipes but also long- gone cooks and their frequently savory instructions.

Mrs. Albert Davies, for instance, advises in The Country Club Cook Book that her Irish cake is “to be eaten with butter with afternoon tea.” Mrs. Francis Cushing Case footnotes her orange marmalade recipe with a warning: “Be careful that it does not burn towards the last.”

The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
