LEWISTON — A bomb squad was called Friday afternoon out to Alfred Plourde Parkway for what appeared to be a military ordnance found at a recycling facility.

The item was later found to be a “disarmed artillery shell.”

Lewiston police were called to Re-Energy Recycling at 38 Alfred Plourde Parkway in the early afternoon after staff there reported finding the item.

Police called for assistance from the Maine State Police Bomb squad, which was on scene at about 3 p.m. The area was quickly evacuated as the investigation into the item got underway.

There were no reports of injury.

Alfred Plourde, between Goddard and River roads was closed to traffic during the investigation. It was reopened by 4 p.m.

There was no report of where the artillery item had come from. Re-Energy takes in construction and demolition material from around New England.
