If U.S. Rep. Jared Golden doesn’t realize that Maine voters know he’s trying to walk the fence, he’s selling us short.

He won’t endorse the official democratic nominee for president. Who he votes for president is nobody’s business? (“Democrats try to balance diverging campaigns by Golden and Harris,” Aug. 17.)

He’s not Jane Doe or John Smith. The Maine voters are responsible for putting him in his congressional seat, and he’s responsible to the Maine voters for telling us how he votes, just as he is for telling us how he votes for legislation that does or does not pass.

He’s trying to secure his seat in Congress no matter what happens, instead of taking a stand. Golden should know that Maine voters are not naive, and he is not that clever.

If he wants to do the right thing by Mainers as he says in his ad, he should tell the voters who have supported him who he does and does not support, instead of flip flopping like a fish out of water.
