Area golfers had a more-than-respectable showing at the Maine Golf Senior Amateur held Aug. 21-22 at Sanford.

Roland Myers of Martindale (75-73—148) finished in a tie for third overall, but that got him only a tie for third in his age group (60-64). That age group was the most competitive division in the tournament.

Roger Williams of Turner Highlands (76-75—151) tied for ninth and was first gross in his age group of 55-59.

Then there was the Norway duo of Brewster Burns and Jon Ladd, both of whom shot 75-77—152 to tie for 11th. Ladd finished second in his age group (55-59). Burns was seventh in the 60-64 category. Figure that.

David Luce of Martindale (82-71—153) tied for 13th overall in a field of 118 players and tied for third gross in his age group of 55-59.

Another good performance came from George Goodspeed of Spring Meadows (79-84—163) who was tied for 48th overall but was in a deadlock of 11th in his age group (65-69).

Congratulations to all of these men, who did very well over two days in rainy weather.

And let’s not minimize the performance of Mark Plummer of Augusta, who was many times the Maine Amateur champion and winner of a few Maine Senior Amateur titles. The seemingly ageless Plummer shot 77-72—149 to finish sixth overall, while winning his 70-plus age group by a lot, as he continues to be the greatest Maine amateur of all-time.

It has been a remarkable summer for junior golfer Jade Haylock of Turner Highlands.

She won her first Maine women’s amateur championship in July at Biddeford-Saco, outplaying her older sister, Ruby, by three shots. Ruby had been the women’s amateur titlist twice previously.

Jade, a rising senior at Leavitt Area High School in Turner, has won three Maine state golf crowns in Class B and is an All-Region honoree.

How good might she become if she goes to a college which has a longer golf season than the short one in Maine?
