OXFORD — The owner of the Record Lumber Sawmill that burned late Friday night plans to rebuild, Oxford Fire Chief Ashley Wax-Armstrong, said Monday.

She said she asked the Office of the State Fire Marshal to assist in determining the cause of the blaze that leveled buildings and destroyed equipment at 60 East Oxford Road. She estimated the damage at $2.5 million.

Merle Record established the sawmill in 1979.

Wax-Armstrong said he plans to rebuild it. It was insured, she said.

The fire is believed to have started sometime between late Friday night and early Saturday morning. It was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived.

Planers and four forklifts were among the equipment destroyed.

No damage to the surrounding properties was reported.

According to Wax-Armstrong, there were no injuries or fatalities.

It was unclear how many people were employed at the mill.

A total of 11 fire departments from nearby communities responded to the fire, including Oxford, Norway, Paris, West Paris, Otisfield, Auburn, Casco, Harrison, Naples and Sweden.

Located on eight acres, the land and buildings are listed at nearly $650,000, according to the Oxford Town Office. Taxes for the current year were $5,705.04.

Members of the Record family could not be reached for comment Monday.

Oxford Town Manager Adam Garland did not return calls seeking comment.
