A hand-carved wooden eagle is erected Monday at Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street in Lewiston. Created by artist Matthew Carr of Matthew Carr Woodworks of Pennsylvania, the sculpture is made of mahogany and adorned with 23 carat gold leaf. It was inspired by a historic John Haley Bellamy design. The gift is a joint venture by Carr and the Maine nonprofit Eagles for Veterans to honor the service of veterans whose names are memorialized on nearly three dozen granite monuments at the park.
