Marcia Leigh (Humason) Akers
AUBURN – Marcia Leigh (Humason) Akers, 76, of Poland, passed away peacefully on Aug. 25, 2024, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Marcia was born on May 3, 1948, in Hopedale, Massachusetts, to John and Barbara Robertson.
She was educated in Hopedale schools and moved to Lewiston, at the age of 16, where she graduated from Lewiston High School in 1966. In 1969, she earned her nursing degree from CMMC School of Nursing and dedicated 35 years to working at CMMC.
Following a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, Marcia was compelled to retire from her beloved nursing career. Throughout her life, she epitomized selflessness, prioritizing the needs of others above her own. She was a passionate advocate for MS research, traveling to Washington, D.C., to lobby Congress for increased funding. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was actively involved in mission work within her community. She served as a trustee at the Empire Grove Camp Meeting Association in Poland and was deeply involved with the United Methodist Church of Auburn, Maine.
Marcia’s family was her greatest joy. She married Walter Humason in 1968, and together they had two daughters, Dawn and Debbi, before his passing in 1988. In 1998, she married Carroll Akers. Marcia’ s greatest pride was her grandchildren: Brayden, Koby, Saphryn, Kailey, Derek, Michael, Daisey, and Kaleb. She was their most ardent supporter and found immense joy in their achievements.
Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Walter, and her daughter Debra Humason-Fulgham. She is survived by her husband Carroll of Poland; her daughter Dawn and her husband Jeff Beaule of Lewiston; her stepson Kyle Akers and his wife Vicki of Michigan; her son-in-law Stanford Fulgham of Auburn; her brother Paul Robertson and his partner Yvonne of Florida; and her sister-in-law Dottie Jones of Wiscasset.
