DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Androscoggin Historical Society is looking for people with knowledge of local history, culture, industry, business or the community who are interested in sharing their knowledge with others.

The society is compiling a list of interested individuals willing to become a resource for society members and those who look to the society for answers to their questions.

If you are passionate about for an interest you have researched and are willing to share your findings with others, please contact the society at info@androhistory.org or at 207-784-0586.

Thank you for your support of our organization.—Penny, Lewiston

ANSWER: This is a great opportunity to become involved in the society where you can meet others, share what you know and probably learn something new yourself. Please join in if you can.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I saw in the Sept. 9 Sun Spots column today in which someone asked a question about the points in the cribbage hand: 98887. If it is put in the proper order, it is 78889, so the answer is 21 points. 15 for six and a run of 15 equals 21.—Jeanne, no town

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the cribbage player who thought her hand of 9-8-8-8-7 was 30 points, the answer is 21. She can make three 15 combinations with the 8s and the 7, for six points; she can make three run combinations using a different 8 each time, for nine points; and the three 8s are worth six points. So 9+6+6=21. I hope this helps. (And you are right that 29 is the highest hand.)—Janice, no town

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the person requesting the total of her points in a cribbage hand with 9-8-8-8-7 (one of these cards is the one flipped from the pack after dealing):

(1) There are three combinations of 15, with each combination worth two points: 7+8, 7+8, 7+8=6 points.

(2) A combination of runs with three of a kind (8s) is always worth 15 points. You have three runs of three cards, each run worth three points: 9-8-7, 9-8-7, 9-8-7=9 points

(3) Then three of a kind is six points (you can make three pairs of 8s)=6 points. So combinations equaling 15 plus the runs total=21 points.—Connie, no town

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the cribbage question, 7-8-8-8-9=21; 15/2 (8+7 combination) x 3=6 points, three runs of three (7-8-9)=9 points; and three of a kind (8s)=6 points.—Linda, no town

ANSWER: I included all the responses I received so not to leave anything out. I hope this is helpful to our cribbage-playing Sun Spotter.
