Koren Hawley of Auburn hoists up her son, Roice, on Wednesday to help him pick apples at Wallingford’s Fruit House in Auburn. Nearby, her younger sons, Dawson, 4, and Jeremiah, 2, watch. “The apples at the top are the best,” Roice said. “They get the most sun and are the most organic.” The family was at their first home-schoolers’ gathering at the orchard. “It’s our first time,” Hawley said.
