I am writing in support of Sue Martin’s guest column (“Universal school choice — a good choice?,” Sept. 15).
I completely agree that while universal school choice may sound like a good idea, it is not.
Taxpayers should not subsidize parents who choose to send their children to private schools. First of all, this would encourage parents to abandon their local school system and drain the funding for our public education system. Most of those who choose to send their children to private schools can afford to do so, and do not need taxpayer money to do so.
It is imperative, if we are to prosper as a society and support our democratic values, that we provide high-quality education to all children, regardless of their parents’ income level. Taxpayer support of private schools is a dangerous policy.
