BALTIMORE — Kerry Carpenter homered twice, Parker Meadows made a home run-saving grab and the surging Detroit Tigers gained ground in the American League wild-card race with a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
Carpenter’s third multi-home run game of the season ensured the Tigers their first winning season since 2016 as Detroit (82-74) matched Kansas City (82-74) and moved a game in front of Minnesota (81-74) for the final AL wild card spot.
The Twins, who won the season series 7-6 with the Tigers, were swept in a doubleheader by the Red Sox. The Twins would finish ahead of the Tigers if they finish with the same record.
The Tigers have won 11 of their last 14.
Baltimore (86-70) lost its fifth consecutive series and fell 51/2 games behind New York (91-64) in the AL East race with six to play but are still four games ahead of Kansas City and Detroit for the top wild card spot.

New York finishes the regular season with three games each at Atlanta and Milwaukee.
Philadelphia (92-64) needs one win in its last six games to clinch its first NL East title since 2011. The Phillies host the Chicago Cubs in a three-game series starting Monday night, then close with three games at Washington next weekend.
BREWERS 10, DIAMONDBACKS 9: Jake Bauers drove in the go-ahead run with a pinch-hit infield single that capped a four-run eighth inning as Milwaukee overcame an eight-run deficit and avoided a series sweep, rallying for a win over visiting Arizona.

NOTES
METS: Pitcher Kodai Senga felt tightness in his right triceps during a minor league rehab outing and won’t pitch during the regular season.
Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza said the 31-year-old right-hander might throw a bullpen session and remains a possibility for the postseason.
ASTROS: Outfielder Yordan Alvarez exited Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels with a right knee contusion after sliding into second base after hitting a double in the third inning.
Alvarez slid into second, stood up and bent over and put his hands on his knees in pain after taking a few steps. Astros training staff and Manager Joe Espada went out to check on him.
“Pretty sore,” Espada said about Alvarez. “We are getting some imaging done right now. Not what I wanted to see when I ran out there. Just when he slid and just his weight on the knee. Just the way he landed. So, hopefully we’ll get some good news.”
