AUBURN — A local man died Monday morning in a fire on Washington Street that destroyed the home.
The man is believed to be Steven Berry, 60, according to a statement from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss. Berry lived alone at the 790 Washington St. North home. Because of the extent of the damage, the cause of the fire is undetermined, according to Moss’ statement.
The two-story residence near the former Rolandeau’s restaurant was already burning when firefighters arrived at about 1:30 a.m.
“Auburn fire units arrived to find heavy fire throughout the two-story residence, with structural collapse of the roof and structural compromise of the second floor, which limited fire suppression operations to the exterior of the building,” according to a statement from fire Chief Robert Chase issued by the city Monday morning.
Officials said that once the fire was suppressed, the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire led to the discovery of the body of a deceased adult inside the structure. The body was sent to the state’s Medical Examiner’s Office for identification.
According to the statement, the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office will conduct the investigation into the cause of the fire.
Assistance at the scene of the fire was provided by the Auburn Police Department, Auburn Public Works, Auburn Water/Sewerage District, Central Maine Power and Unitil. Also responding were fire departments from Lewiston, New Gloucester and Mechanic Falls.
