LEWISTON — Shots were fired downtown late Tuesday night and witnesses said the shootings occurred in at least two locations.

Shortly after 8 p.m., police were called out to the area of Birch Street, after shots were reported fired in the area. One witness said he heard five shots ring out.

Additional shots were reported in the area of Ash and Howe streets according to witnesses. Police were investigating in both areas later Tuesday night. A police spokesman was not available for comment.

Early reports were that no one was injured by gunfire in either of the shootings.

City officials in recent months have been trying to find a solution for the near constant gunfire and other violence in downtown Lewiston since the start of the year. At the end of August, police and city leaders held a news conference to address the matter. Several less formal public meetings have been held on the matter, as well.

Many of the shootings have been without victims. Some, though, were more serious.

In mid-July, 17-year-old Sahal Muridi was killed in a shooting on Rideout Avenue, which remains under investigation. Earlier this month, a car was peppered by gunfire on Pierce Street. In that shooting, no one was hurt but a round penetrated and shattered the rear passenger window and exited the front passenger side of the window.
