NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sedrick Alexander ran for two touchdowns, Randon Fontenette scored on an interception return and Vanderbilt stunned Alabama 40-35 on Saturday for its first win against a top-ranked team.

Vanderbilt (3-2, 1-1 Southeastern) had lost all 60 games against top-five teams. The Commodores hadn’t beaten Alabama (4-1, 1-1) in 40 years.

The Commodores scored the first 13 points and took a 16-point lead that was their largest ever over a No. 1 team. Only Jam Miller running for his second TD just before halftime trimmed that to 23-14.

Alabama had just moved to the top of The Associated Press’ Top 25 after an emotional win over Georgia.

(3) OHIO STATE 35, IOWA 7: Emeka Egbuka caught three touchdown passes and Jeremiah Smith made another one-handed grab for a score for Ohio State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten), which sputtered early before burying Iowa (3-2, 1-1) at Columbus, Ohio.

(5) GEORGIA 31, AUBURN 13: Trevor Etienne ran for two touchdowns as Georgia (4-1, 2-1 Southeastern) bounced back from its first regular-season loss in almost four years with a workmanlike victory against Auburn (2-4, 0-3) at Athens, Georgia.

(7) PENN STATE 27, UCLA 11: Drew Allar threw for 237 yards with a touchdown and ran for another score to lead Penn State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) over UCLA (1-4, 0-3) at State College, Pennsylvania.

(25) TEXAS A&M 41, (9) MISSOURI 10: Le’Veon Moss ran for a career-high 138 yards with three touchdowns as Texas A&M (5-1, 3-0 Southeastern) rolled past Missouri (4-1, 1-1) at College Station, Texas.

(12) MISSISSIPPI 27, SOUTH CAROLINA 3: JJ Pegues, a 325-pound nose tackle, ran for two short touchdowns as Mississippi (5-1, 1-1 Southeastern) bounced back from its first loss of the season to beat South Carolina(3-2, 1-2) at Columbia, South Carolina.

SOUTHERN METHODIST 34, (22) LOUISVILLE 27: Kevin Jennings passed for a career-high 281 yards, Isaiah Nwokobia intercepted an end-zone pass with 2:23 left to seal it, and visiting SMU (3-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast) overcame blowing a double-digit lead to beat Louisville (3-2, 1-1).

(23) INDIANA 41, NORTHWESTERN 24: Kurtis Rourke threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns to help Indiana (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) beat Northwestern (2-3, 0-2) at Evanston, Illinois.

UNE 68, DEAN 0: Chris Lang threw three touchdown passes and four players rushed for scores as the University of New England (2-3) rolled past Dean (0-4) at Biddeford.

Lang, who completed 14 of 18 passes for 210 yards, threw scoring passes of 5 yards to Damien Jones, 21 to Nathan Delgado and 26 to Jakob Rivers.

Backup quarterback Will Ledbetter (4 of 5 passing, 44 yards) added a 9-yard pass to Ty Leblond in the fourth quarter for the Nor’easters.

Shane LaPorte had two scoring runs, and Jones, Will Stafford and Jeremy Barton also had rushing TDs against the Bulldogs, who have totaled seven points this season.

WILLIAMS 34, BOWDOIN 14: Owen McHugh threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns, and the Ephs (3-1) scored 27 straight points in the second half against the Polar Bears (1-3) in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

McHugh threw TD passes of 22, 4 and 37 yards, and Mario Fischetti (nine carries, 177 yards) had scoring runs of 68 and 80 yards for the Ephs.

Koy Price scored on a 15-yard fumble recovery in the first quarter and Michael Wolfend hit Jed Hoggard for a 23-yard scoring strike in the fourth for Bowdoin.

Hoggard finished with five receptions for 94 yards.
