LEWISTON — The L&A Veterans Council will host a mobile stand down for homeless veterans Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street.
The event, authorized by the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services, will be held at the park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is one of four events scheduled throughout the state during October.
A similar event was held in Portland last week. Upcoming stand downs are scheduled for Bangor and Augusta.
The stand down will offer homeless veterans and those at-risk with connections to a variety of services to help overcome the daily challenges they face:
• Housing and employment assistance.
• Health screenings and flu shots.
• Mental health and substance use support.
• Clothing and other essential item.
• Free haircuts.
Lunch will be provided. Veterans will also receive free rides on the Citylink bus system to get to and from the event.
“Stand downs are an important part of our ongoing efforts to reduce and prevent homeless veterans in Maine,” David Richmond, the director of the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services, said. “In addition to our regular outreach, stand downs provide us the opportunity to reach at-risk veterans where they are and connect them to housing and the resources they deserve.”
L&A Veterans Council Chairman Jerry DeWitt said Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline and Auburn Mayor Jeffrey Harmon have been invited to the event.
