Ogunquit Police say no one was injured after a report of shots being fired closed part of Route 1 on Monday morning.
Chief John Lizanecz said officers responded to a report of at least five gunshots in the area of 67 Main St., near the Hideaway Inn, around 3:50 a.m. Those staying at the hotel, which included nearly 20 seasonal workers, were temporarily relocated to Ogunquit Town Hall, he said.
“Everyone’s been accounted for, there were no injuries,” Lizanecz said on a phone call shortly before 3:30 p.m. “They’re all back into work and back in the inn.”
The department received only one call, he said, but several people at the inn also told police they heard something that sounded like gunshots. Lizanecz said police also found used fireworks casings and spent ammunition outside the hotel, and either might have been responsible for the noise.
“We’re trying to find out exactly if those shell casings were old, (or) if they were stemming from that incident,” Lizanecz said.
He said three men who had been standing outside ran back into the hotel when officers arrived, but police were not able to identify them in the early morning light.
Police also confiscated two handguns and a rifle from one person staying at the hotel, Lizanecz said, but it was not clear whether the guns had been recently fired, whether they were legally obtained or whether that person was among those who ran back inside. He said an investigation is ongoing and the department is working with the FBI and Maine State Police to determine the guns’ background.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Wells dispatch center at 207-646-9354. The department would not clarify what the cause of the incident was or how it was resolved.
Residents were asked to lock their doors and avoid the southbound lane of Route 1 (Main Street), which was closed from the center of Ogunquit to Bourne Lane, from around 8:30 a.m. until just before 11 a.m. Lizanecz said the road closure was a precautionary measure and there was no ongoing threat to the public. Businesses and residents were able to resume normal activities around 11 a.m., a dispatcher said at the time.
Town hall was closed until the end of the day Monday to be used by police and those displaced, according to the town hall’s Facebook page.
