LEWISTON — More than 240 residents from Lewiston, Auburn and surrounding communities participated in this year’s Lakes and Mountains Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sept. 14 at Simard Payne Park.
Participants raised more than $45,000 to support the care, support and research programs of the Alzheimer’s Association.
“The funds raised will help fuel disease research while also providing critical care and support to individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementia,” Drew Wyman, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association Maine Chapter, said in a news release from the chapter.
Participants honored those affected by Alzheimer’s with the Promise Garden ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against the disease. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s — their personal reasons to end the disease.
The walk aims to reach $50,000 by the end of the year. Although Walk Day has passed, individuals are encouraged to still register, walk in their own neighborhoods, and continue to raise funds.
