Irene M. Martin

AUBURN – Irene M. Martin, 90, a resident of Schooner Estates in Auburn, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at the Andwell Hospice House in Auburn. Born in Lewiston on Sept. 18, 1934, she was the daughter of Willie and Antoinette (Roux) Rioux.

She grew up in Sabattus, and graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of ‘50. On Sept/ 29, 1956, she married the love of her life, Bertrand A. Martin. They raised their family locally, and then built their retirement home on Lovejoy Pond in Fayette, living there for almost 30 years. Their home became “camp” to all their family and friends. Irene loved to cook, feed, and host at camp, and was active in the Elks Club, American Legion Post #40 Auxiliary, the VFW Post #3335 Auxiliary, and the St. Francis Xavier Ladies Auxiliary. Her favorite activity was dancing with her husband, they were always the first couple on the dance floor at any event, and the last to leave. Mr. Martin passed away on March 22, 2019.

Irene worked many different jobs over the years, including as a paralegal at Fales & Fales, and as an executive secretary at Androscoggin Bank and later Pioneer Plastics, where she retired from.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Anthony and husband David of Freeport, two sons, Ronald and wife Anne Marie of Lisbon, and Daniel of Minot, a Godson who lived with them for eight years, Roland Johansen and wife Jeannine of Lewiston; ten grandchildren, Tyler, Audrey, Lydia and Spencer Martin, Nicholas, Christian and Shawn Anthony, and Sheryl, Steve, and Derek Johansen; 11 great-grandchildren, Ryan Griffey, Eli and Saige Martin, Raymond, Abel and Robert Martin, James Jr. and Elowyn Poulin, Ryleigh Martin, and Madison and William Anthony. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Willie Rioux, and Maurice Rioux.

Visiting hours will be held at Albert & Burpee Funeral Home on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 4 – 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m. at Holy Cross Church in Lewiston. Interment, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
